I once took the plunge and joined the MPA but found that I was getting absolutely nothing from them (I left after a year) and having looked at the SWPP and BIPP I figured that they would be exactly the same, nothing seemed to separate them, no one group offered anything that the others didn’t and what they did offer didn’t seem worth the (quite expensive) annual membership fees that they charge.

3 years ago I was recommended by someone to join The NPS (National Photographic Society – www.thenps.co.uk) and my immediate response was no! I told them that I thought they were all a waste of time and was told that this one was different. I’m glad to say that I didn’t cut my nose off to spite my face and joined up and am very pleased indeed.

Apart from the fact that I won an award with them within a few months of joining! I have received so many benefits (free website hosting, free off site backup, discounts etc etc) I have used their training section extensively (not for photography but for the stuff that I am out of date with such as social media marketing etc) it has cost me less to be a member than not to be!!! The cost of hosting I save alone has paid for the membership fee and thats before adding up the hundreds of pounds I’ve saved with discounts on things like my insurance.

So if you are a photographer and thinking of joining a UK organisation for photographers then I urge you to join The NPS – you won’t regret it!

I have been taking photos for nearly 30 years and most of that time I have owned and run a studio but for the last 5 years I have been so busy with photographic projects and wedding work that I have had no time to run a studio.

Since I have decided to cut back on the number of ‘out of the county’ photographic work that I take on I am once again opening a studio for portraits here in Newquay.

I used to use Graphistudio albums who are also based in Italy, however the quality of these has gone down over the last few years and whilst a lot of photographers still use them I have decided to move to a handmade album.
